President-elect Donald Trump has just announced that he is nominating former Congressman Sean Duffy (53 years old), currently a Fox News host, for the position of Secretary of Transportation.

Previously, Mr. Trump surprised political observers when he nominated Mr. Pete Hegseth (44 years old), host of the program "Fox & Friends Weekend" of Fox News, to hold the position of Secretary of Defense.

If confirmed, Mr. Duffy would oversee aviation, auto, rail, public transit and other transportation policies at the department, which has a budget of about $110 billion, as well as significant funding under President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure law for 2021 and electric vehicle charging stations.

Mr Trump has vowed to roll back the current administration’s vehicle emissions regulations, which increased emissions cuts and pushed automakers to build more electric vehicles.

Will Trump court-martial more officers over chaotic Afghanistan withdrawal?

The president-elect said Mr. Duffy would prioritize “excellence, competence, competitiveness and beauty when rebuilding America’s highways, tunnels, bridges and airports.” “He will ensure our ports and dams serve our economy without compromising our national security,” Mr. Trump said.

Observers say the next transport minister will face many big problems such as increased traffic accidents and pressure from Tesla and other companies to loosen regulations on self-driving cars.

Duffy will oversee continued safety oversight of Boeing. He will also decide whether to continue the Biden administration’s push for airline passenger rights and whether to approve additional airline joint ventures.

In addition, Mr. Duffy will also be responsible for overseeing companies run by billionaire Elon Musk, who has been closely involved in Mr. Trump's transition.

One of Musk's companies, SpaceX, is scheduled to launch its Starship rocket on November 19, and US media reported that Trump would attend the event in Texas, demonstrating the increasingly close relationship between the two.

In his victory speech on election night, Mr. Trump lavished praise on Starship, calling the launch “a beautiful sight” and emphasizing that only the United States was capable of achieving such a technological triumph.
