In addition to semiconductors, Mr. Trump also threatened to soon impose tariffs on foreign-made pharmaceuticals and metals to force companies to move production to the United States.

"If you want to stop paying taxes or tariffs, you have to build your factory right here in the United States," US President Donald Trump emphasized at a conference of Republican congressmen held in Miami on January 27.

The US leader has said he will soon impose tariffs on foreign-made semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and metals, such as steel.

"I will also impose tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper and other items we need for our military," Mr. Trump added.

Tariffs are a key part of Mr Trump's economic agenda.

During his first term, he imposed sweeping tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, targeting allies like Canada, Mexico and the European Union. But those measures prompted retaliation from major U.S. trading partners.

Economists have warned that tariffs could weigh on growth and increase inflation, because they are often paid by importers bringing products into the US.

However, these importers will not "take" the increased costs due to tariffs alone but will pass them on to end users, American consumers.

Despite the concerns, those close to Mr. Trump argue that tariffs are a means to negotiate and end unfair trade practices with the United States.

During his first term, Trump launched a trade and technology war with China. Many of the export restrictions aimed at blocking Beijing’s advances and maintaining Washington’s advantage have been continued under the Joe Biden administration.

However, recent developments, including the emergence of China's domestically developed AI chips and the newly unveiled AI model by DeepSeek, have raised some skepticism about the overall effectiveness of the US's containment measures against Beijing.
