Former US President Donald Trump has declared that if he is elected, no state will be allowed to ban gasoline-powered cars and trucks, as he makes the future of the auto industry a key campaign issue.

Mr Trump is currently seeking to attract voters in the battleground state of Michigan, home to three major automakers: GM, Ford and Stellantis (formerly Chrysler). In August, he told Reuters that he was considering ending the electric vehicle tax exemption.

"When I'm president, no state in America will be allowed to ban gasoline-powered cars or trucks, and I guarantee it - no way. You're going to build them right here," he said at a rally in Saginaw, Michigan, on October 3.

Vice President Kamala Harris' campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mr. Trump: Opponents no longer respect America

In August 2022, California approved a landmark plan to end the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles in the state by 2035.

Automakers have questioned California's 2035 plan, saying that electric vehicle requirements may be feasible "at least in the early years for California" but that the outlook for other states with significantly lower EV sales is "more uncertain."

President Joe Biden's administration has repeatedly refused to set a date to end sales of gasoline-powered vehicles but has provided billions of dollars in subsidies and tax breaks to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles.

Mr Biden wants 50% of new cars to be electric by 2030 and says this is essential to compete with China.
