New Harmful Effects of Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure Discovered

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên27/10/2024

One of the main health effects of high blood pressure is that it causes arteries to become thicker and stiffer, increasing the risk of atherosclerosis. This can lead to heart attacks and strokes.

The study, conducted by experts at the Federal University of Sao Paulo (Brazil), was published in the journal Advances in Respiratory Medicine . The researchers evaluated the respiratory function of 700 people aged 60 and older. These people were tested for respiratory function by measuring air pressure when inhaling and exhaling, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

High blood pressure can affect lung function

The analysis found that high blood pressure can impair a person's ability to breathe by causing the bronchi to become stiffer. As the bronchi stiffen, it increases the resistance as air passes through the bronchi to the lungs.

This condition affects the bronchi in a similar way to what high blood pressure does to the arteries. Abnormally high pressure in the blood vessel walls over a long period of time causes the blood vessel walls to thicken and stiffen.

The stiffer the bronchi, the more difficult it is for air to flow in and out of the lungs, the study authors said. Over time, the increasingly severe process of bronchiectasis will cause difficulty breathing in older adults. Furthermore, difficulty breathing will lead to low oxygen saturation in the blood. In other words, low blood oxygen levels over a long period of time will accelerate the aging process.

Additionally, uncontrolled high blood pressure can impair lung function. However, research has also found that regular exercise can help protect the bronchi from the stiffening of high blood pressure and prevent lung function decline.

Therefore, experts recommend that people with high blood pressure should have their lung function assessed, especially older patients. At the same time, they are also recommended to change their lifestyle to avoid high blood pressure from negatively affecting the lungs.

Regular exercise is considered a good way to control blood pressure and improve overall health. In addition, patients also need to take medication as prescribed by the doctor, avoid eating a lot of salt, quit smoking, drinking alcohol and limit caffeinated foods such as tea or coffee, according to Healthline .
