French inventor Franky Zapata has unveiled a new personal flying vehicle with an egg-shaped cockpit that can fly at altitudes of up to 2,900 metres. A two-hour car journey during rush hour can be cut down to 10 minutes with this Airscooter, the Mail reported on August 21.
Zapata shared renderings of the Airscooter and said the vehicle is currently under construction. The Airscooter is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft that can take to the air without needing a runway. It is a hybrid electric vehicle that uses a combination of fuel and electricity to spin six rotors mounted around the top of an egg-shaped cockpit. Thanks to its hybrid electric propulsion system, the Airscooter can fly for two hours, longer than any other VTOL model on the market.
The push-button cockpit allows anyone to easily take the wheel after a short training session. The ultra-lightweight design means the Airscooter weighs just 115kg, roughly the same as two adults. Although it is intended to replace cars, the Airscooter will not be sold commercially. Instead, people will pay a fee to drive themselves for 40 minutes, enjoying the scenery through the window.
Starting next year, Zapata will open flight centers in the United States, offering leisure flights to customers. The first center will be located in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
