New Chitose Airport (CTS) on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido has been temporarily closed due to concerns over a pair of scissors missing from a shop in the domestic departures area. The airport was subject to hours of security checks.

According to the airport, 36 flights were canceled on August 17 and another 201 were delayed during the search. There were concerns that a terrorist might have taken the scissors and used them as a weapon on the flight. Ultimately, the airport said the scissors were found and flights were able to resume.

"We understand that the incident occurred because the store did not have a proper system for use, storage and management," New Chitose Airport said in a statement.

"We will investigate this incident, determine the cause and prevent it from recurring. We will also reiterate that this incident may be related to hijacking and terrorist attacks, and we will ensure that all airport staff are fully aware of the importance of management."

Many passengers took to the internet to express their frustration. "I feel like crying because my flight was cancelled, just because someone lost a pair of scissors," one passenger wrote on X.

"Because of this incident, the flight I was planning to take was cancelled, and now the family gathering I was looking forward to has been cut short. What a huge disappointment," another wrote.

Others, however, praised the airport for taking the scissors loss seriously. "As a passenger, I am grateful that they have taken comprehensive measures to ensure safety," one X user posted.
