The government of India's capital New Delhi announced on March 1 that gas stations in the city will soon stop filling up cars that are more than 15 years old.
New Delhi Environment Department Director Manjinder Singh Sirsa said on March 1 that the decision to stop refueling old cars was made at a "marathon meeting" on air pollution to "find the ills and remedies", according to AFP.
"We have decided to stop supplying fuel to vehicles that are more than 15 years old after March 31, 2025," Sirsa stressed, adding that equipment will be installed at gas stations to identify such old vehicles.
New Delhi is regularly ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world.
Diesel and petrol cars older than 10 and 15 years respectively are not allowed on the streets of New Delhi but many have been caught violating the rules.
Other measures taken to reduce the Indian capital's dangerous pollution levels include turning barren land into "new forests" and encouraging university students to plant trees, Sirsa said. He added that the government would make it mandatory for high-rise buildings, hotels and airports to install anti-smog guns and other pollution-control gadgets.
New Delhi is regularly ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world and is shrouded in heavy smog every year. The main causes of pollution are stubble burning by nearby farmers, as well as factories and vehicle exhaust.
The public health crisis has worsened over the years and weeks-long school closures across the capital New Delhi, aimed at protecting vulnerable children from toxic air, have become an annual event, according to AFP.
