On his first night in prison, the former prime minister was taken to hospital with chest pains and high blood pressure. In the months that followed, his family said, Thaksin underwent two surgeries.

On February 18, Mr. Thaksin was released after completing half of his sentence. The former prime minister was seen leaving the hospital with his daughter and his arm bandaged.
