"Former Vietnamese students in Australia are valuable bridges between our two countries," Australian Ambassador Gillian Bird affirmed at the event.

According to her, the relationship between Australia and Vietnam is built on the foundation of strong people-to-people ties, extensive economic links and a shared vision of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indo- Pacific region.

With their experience and deep understanding of both countries, alumni play an important role in promoting mutual understanding and enhancing economic cooperation between Australia and Vietnam.

“An Australian education has helped me realise my potential. Not only have I gained skills, but I have also gained empowerment and confidence. This has changed the way I lead and share with many other people with disabilities on their journey to a better life. I will continue on my chosen path inspired by my long-standing connection with Australia,” said Nguyen Thi Van, recipient of the 2025 Australian Alumni Award for Economic Engagement.

The Australia-Vietnam Human Resources Development Program (Aus4Skills) has been operating for 10 years with the aim of enhancing understanding and connecting people of the two countries, thereby promoting the Australia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

In addition to alumni activities, the Aus4Skills Program also includes components of Australian Government scholarships, vocational education, higher education capacity building, and enhancing public sector leadership capacity in Vietnam.

At the event, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Education and Training) shared: “Educational partnerships promote cultural understanding and strengthen people-to-people ties, contributing to the dynamic and close Australia-Vietnam relationship. With many opportunities to access global knowledge and skills, Australian alumni are actively contributing to Vietnam’s economic growth, modernization and international integration.”

This awards ceremony and reunion is an opportunity for alumni to reunite and reflect on their time in Australia and the ongoing support the Australian Government has provided to the alumni network.

For more than half a century since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1973, education has always been a focus of cooperation between Vietnam and Australia. More than 160,000 former Vietnamese students who studied in Australia are now working in both the public and private sectors from central to local levels. They are leaders and experts, making important contributions to the development of Vietnam and promoting relations between the two countries.
