Honoring the role of women in sports: Towards sustainable development

Women are increasingly asserting their position in the field of sports, not only through outstanding achievements but also through their persistent contributions in coaching, management and policy development.

On the afternoon of June 30, the Vietnam Sports Administration held a seminar with the theme "Sports and women in the era of striving towards sustainable development". The seminar was chaired by Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports Administration, with the participation of many speakers who are managers, female sports entrepreneurs, coaches and outstanding athletes.

In her opening speech, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Sports and Physical Training Department Le Thi Hoang Yen emphasized the important role of women in sports development and improving the quality of life in the community. "In recent times, the achievements of women's sports teams and female athletes such as the national women's football team, the Vietnam women's volleyball team, track and field athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh, swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh... have made Vietnamese sports famous," Ms. Le Thi Hoang Yen shared.

The discussion is an opportunity for delegates to discuss and propose support policies and create conditions for women to develop their careers in sports, especially after retirement.

At the event, athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh emotionally shared her journey of overcoming difficulties from a girl in the countryside of Bac Giang to becoming the number 1 athlete in Vietnam. Oanh affirmed: "Women should be confident in doing what they love, overcoming gender prejudice to assert themselves. If they do not become professional athletes, each woman should choose a sport to practice, be healthy and shine."

From the perspective of sports enterprises, Ms. Tran Thuy Chi - Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Vietcontent Company, raised the urgent issue of the after-career policy for female athletes. According to international statistics, 60% of female athletes face career difficulties and 70% face financial problems after retirement. Ms. Chi suggested that there should be a mechanism to support retraining and create a working environment for female athletes to easily transition to new fields, especially in the sports economy .

Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) Nguyen Thanh Ha said that in the field of football, gender equality has been focused on through programs to develop young female players implemented by the VFF in collaboration with the AFC and FIFA. Many former female players have become professional referees and coaches after retiring. Vietnam currently has a female coach with a Pro certificate - the highest coaching certificate of the AFC, along with female FIFA referees who have officiated at prestigious international tournaments.

The discussion ended with a high level of consensus from delegates, demonstrating a shared commitment to promoting the role of women in sports, towards a sustainable, inclusive and fair sport.
