Vietnam and the Federal Republic of Germany established diplomatic relations on September 23, 1975. Since then, the friendship and cooperation between the two countries have developed positively, becoming increasingly deep, effective and comprehensive. During German Chancellor Angela Merkel's visit to Vietnam (October 2011), the two countries established a strategic partnership.

Germany is Vietnam's largest trading partner in Europe (accounting for nearly 20% of our exports to the EU) and is also an important transit gateway for Vietnamese goods to other markets in Europe.

The two countries have signed many agreements creating a legal basis for economic cooperation such as: Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement; Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement; maritime and aviation agreements.

Germany is the 17th largest investor out of 140 countries and territories investing in Vietnam, with total registered FDI capital reaching 2.3 billion USD as of January. Vietnam is Germany's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia and Germany's sixth largest trading partner in Asia. Two-way trade turnover between the two countries in 2023 will reach more than 11 billion USD.

The Vietnamese community in Germany currently has nearly 200,000 people, living throughout the entire territory of Germany. In general, overseas Vietnamese in Germany have a relatively stable life, most of them working as salaried employees or doing small business. There are also more than 7,000 Vietnamese students studying in Germany.
