US President Donald Trump issues ultimatum to Russia

(CLO) In a post on the social network Truth Social on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump called on Russia to "immediately resolve and end the war" with Ukraine, or face further sanctions.

The US has now banned imports of most Russian products, and since the conflict with Ukraine began nearly three years ago, Russia has faced thousands of sanctions from the US and Europe.

Mr Trump said he had no intention of harming Russia and that he had a good relationship with President Putin. However, he warned of sanctions if the war did not end soon.

"If we don't make a 'deal', and soon, I will have no choice but to impose massive tariffs, fees and sanctions on any product Russia sells to the United States...", Mr. Trump said.

Mr Trump has repeatedly expressed doubts about the billions of dollars the Biden administration has provided to Ukraine. He has frequently said he wants to end the war and asserted that if he were back in the White House, he could end the conflict within 24 hours.

Currently, apart from small amounts of fertilizers, animal feed, inorganic materials such as tin and machinery, Russia exports very few products to the US that could be subject to tariffs.

Oil was previously Russia's largest export to the US, but this trade has completely stopped in 2023.

According to US government statistics, the US imported a total of $2.8 billion worth of products from Russia in 2024, accounting for only a very small portion of total US imports and a sharp decrease compared to $4.5 billion in 2023 and $14.4 billion in 2022.

Additionally, Russia is already one of the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world . Many of the sanctions are related to the conflict with Ukraine in February 2022 and were imposed under President Joe Biden.

There are also sanctions that predate Mr Biden. Some were imposed during Mr Trump’s first term and some were imposed after Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
