With the conversion of the National Economics University into the National Economics University, this will be a public service unit, a public higher education institution under the Ministry of Education and Training , with legal status, its own seal and account.

The Government requires the National Economics University to reorganize its organizational structure and operations in accordance with the Law on Higher Education and relevant legal regulations. During that process, the school must ensure the legitimate rights and interests of relevant parties, operate normally, and avoid negativity, loss, and waste of finances and assets.

The University Council, the Chairman of the University Council, and the Principal shall continue to perform their duties and powers according to current regulations until the Ministry of Education and Training decides to establish the University Council, recognize the Chairman of the University Council, and the Director of the National Economics University according to the provisions of law.

Thus, the National Economics University will become the 9th university in Vietnam, alongside Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, Thai Nguyen University, Hue University, Da Nang University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, and Duy Tan University. Of which, Duy Tan University is the first private university in our country.

According to the Law on Higher Education 2018, university and college are two different concepts. A university is an institution that trains many majors but not many fields. While a university will train in many fields, each field has many majors. Therefore, university will include universities.

To convert from a university to a college, Decree 99/2019 of the Government stipulates that schools must ensure three conditions: be assessed by a legal accreditation organization as meeting quality standards; have at least three schools and 10 doctoral training majors, with a full-time student population of over 15,000; and be approved by the direct management agency and investors.

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son has repeatedly said that the change from university to college is not just about the name, but also about the development orientation.

The university model is suitable for a large system with a large and diverse number of staff, lecturers and students. This model ensures autonomy and unified management, while creating conditions for each affiliated unit to have autonomy, helping the whole system increase dynamism and creativity.

Previously, in early 2024, the National Economics University established three affiliated schools: Economics and Public Management, Business and Technology.

The National Economics University currently has about 25,000 full-time students and more than 1,200 staff and lecturers. The number of undergraduate training majors is 66 and the number of doctoral programs is 28. In the development strategy for the period 2021-2030, the school aims to be among the top 5 universities in Vietnam.
