The WHO said the affected products were all manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories (Pakistan) and were first detected in the Maldives and Pakistan. Some contaminated products also appeared in Belize, Fiji and Laos.

According to WHO, some medicines (syrups containing active ingredients to treat certain medical conditions) contain ethylene glycol in excess of the permitted level. WHO recommends that countries increase their vigilance and check products manufactured by Pharmix Laboratories between December 2021 and December 2022.

According to WHO, a total of 23 batches of Alergo syrup, Emidone suspension, Mucorid syrup, Ulcofin suspension and Zincell syrup are affected. Alergo syrup is currently the only drug detected outside Pakistan.
