UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps announced that the Kingdom plans to spend $514 million to modernize its Sea Viper air defense missile system.

The air defense system was previously used by British forces to shoot down drones over the Red Sea, amid deteriorating tensions in the Middle East.

"As the situation in the Middle East worsens, it is vital that we adapt to keep the UK, our allies and partners safe," Minister Shapps was quoted as saying by The Telegraph .

Secretary Shapps said the Sea Viper was the Navy's weapon of choice in taking out an aerial threat for the first time in more than 30 years.

The contract has been signed with British missile manufacturer MBDA. The Sea Viper missile system will be equipped with new missiles and software to counter ballistic missiles.

Earlier, on January 10, Mr. Shapps said a British destroyer operating in the Red Sea along with US warships repelled the “largest attack” carried out by Houthi rebels in Yemen in the area.
