- For many years, the public has known you by the stage name Cat Tien, why did you decide to change your stage name?
- I have used the stage name Cat Tien to sing for many years and have been known by many people. However, after winning the 1st runner-up prize in the Global Vietnamese Singing Contest, I started to pay more attention to digital music, hoping that my works would be spread on online platforms. Many people advised me to use my birth name as my stage name because it is related to copyright issues as well as making it easier for me to manage and do business with digital music.
The name Duc Thoa sounds a bit masculine but has a special meaning to me. When my father gave me this name, he wanted to send a message: A girl named Thoa means that no matter what job she does, she must use her heart and virtue to become a decent person. When I decided to use my real name to sing, many friends were worried that it would take more time for the audience to get used to me. But I believe that with hard work, the audience will gradually get used to this name.
- As a singer who was formally trained in folk music and also succeeded in the Global Vietnamese Singing Contest thanks to this music genre, why did you choose to sing pop music in your first album "Rain Notes"?
- The music genre I was formally trained in is folk music because my voice is suitable for this genre. In the recent competition, I won the 1st runner-up prize thanks to the mash-up (combining many songs into one performance) of two contemporary folk songs, "Tụy âm" (composed by: Xesi) and "Án trong máy, thủ ô trực tiếp" (composed by: Huỳnh Văn, Rum7).
Contemporary folk music is the genre that helps me develop my technical strengths, but pop music is also my favorite genre. At an age that is not too young, I want to sing songs that carry a lot of philosophy about life and love, in a gentle, romantic and profound way. Therefore, for my first album, I decided to choose the genre of music that I love to introduce to the public.
- So what's new in the album "Rain Notes"?
- "Not mua" includes 5 songs composed by musician Le Huyen Trang and arranged by musician Pham Tuan Ngoc. The songs belong to many light music styles such as "Not mua" (pop rock), "Đanh buong" (R&B), "Tinh chi rieng em" (soul), "Em doi ngay mai" (ballad), "Soan" (symphony).
The choice of songs was also a coincidence. When working with musician Le Huyen Trang, I felt like the songs were written specifically for me - from the lyrics to the melody. Perhaps because we are both women, the thoughts in her songs have many similarities with mine. That is why I decided to collaborate with her to release an album with completely new songs. All 5 songs were released online on online music platforms. This is also my way of approaching music lovers in a modern way.
- In this saturated entertainment industry, many artists try to "warm up" their names by participating in television shows. Do you intend to find more opportunities to reach the public in this way?
- Recently, there have been many popular music TV shows such as "Anh trai say hi", "Anh trai vu ngan cong gai", "Chi dep dap gio xu song", "Ca si mat ma"... These are great launching pads to help artists reach the public, warm up their names, and at the same time promote the cultural industry through entertainment activities.
After the Global Vietnamese Singing Contest, I am also trying to build a new image in music, perfecting my performance and composing skills to meet the increasingly strict requirements of the audience. Each artist will have their own opportunities and decisions when participating in television programs to effectively build their image. Sometimes, participating is not to become more famous but to spread the positive values of music. In the future, I will look for suitable programs to participate in.
- Recently, many artists have produced music products with cultural value, promoting local tourism and creating a strong spread. As a native of the Central region, do you intend to produce a music video to promote your hometown?
- I was born in Quang Tri - a sunny and windy land but full of pride and heroism. I am always proud of my hometown and grateful for the opportunities it has brought me. In the near future, I plan to make a music video in Quang Tri and Hanoi - the place where my dream of becoming a singer was nurtured. I hope to contribute to spreading the beautiful image of the country, especially the land of Central Vietnam rich in love.
- Thank you Duc Thoa for sharing!
