The 42-seat bus was en route to the southern city of Jammu from the town of Kishtwar when it skidded off a Himalayan highway and rolled about 200 meters down a slope onto another road in Indian-controlled Kashmir, AP reported.

Locals and authorities rushed to the accident site and rescue operations were launched. At least 10 people in critical condition have been shifted to a hospital in Jammu. The exact cause of the accident is under investigation.

India has one of the highest road accident death rates in the world , with hundreds of thousands of people killed and injured every year. Most accidents are caused by driver error, poorly maintained roads and old vehicles.
