ASEAN issues joint statement, acknowledging Myanmar's efforts to safely evacuate its citizens and foreign nationals from the conflict zone

On November 24, the foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member countries issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over the recent escalation of conflict, especially in Shan State in northern Myanmar, which has forced many civilians, including foreigners and ASEAN citizens, to flee.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers have called for the safe return of citizens of conflict-affected countries in the region, while urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint and immediately end all forms of violence, comply with international humanitarian law and take all necessary measures to protect and ensure the safety of all civilians.

The joint statement also called on the Myanmar government and relevant parties to provide urgent humanitarian assistance, ensure rapid and safe movement to evacuate stranded foreign nationals, and acknowledge the efforts of the Myanmar government in safely evacuating ASEAN citizens and nationals from the conflict area and repatriating them safely in coordination with the Embassies of relevant countries.

ASEAN Foreign Ministers also stressed that peace and unity in Myanmar are in the interests of the entire bloc, reaffirming their commitment to supporting Myanmar in finding a peaceful and lasting solution to the current crisis through the full and prompt implementation of the Five-Point Consensus for peace , security and stability in the region.
