Tensions have escalated on the Korean Peninsula as Pyongyang threatens military action against Seoul, following North Korea's accusation that South Korea has flown drones over its capital Pyongyang.

North Korea said on October 13 that it had ordered artillery units near the border with South Korea to be ready to fire, a move that came after the country threatened to inflict a “horrific disaster” on Seoul.

Kim Yo Jong, the powerful sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said North Korea was ready to take “strong corresponding countermeasures” if drones carrying anti-Pyongyang material continued to intrude into its territory. She warned that the “moment of attack” could come at any time.

North Korea's foreign ministry said South Korean drones carrying leaflets were spotted in the skies over Pyongyang on October 3 and two days earlier this week.

However, South Korea has denied the allegation. South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun initially denied that the country's military had sent drones across the border, but the Joint Chiefs of Staff later said they could not confirm the authenticity of the North Korean claim.

In response to North Korea's threats, the South Korean Defense Ministry warned that any attempt by Pyongyang to harm the South Korean people would lead to the end of the Kim Jong Un regime.
