AFP news agency reported on January 18 that Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Josip Dabro, a member of the far-right Homeland Movement party, has just resigned after a video appeared showing him firing from a moving car.

The incident caused further trouble for Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's cabinet, after former Health Minister Vili Bros was fired in November 2023 and faced a corruption investigation.

"I hereby irrevocably submit my resignation," Dabro, 42, wrote on Facebook. The official also serves as Croatia's Minister of Agriculture , Forestry and Fisheries in Plenkovic's government.

The footage, released by the Jutarnji List earlier this week, shows Mr Dabro sitting in the passenger seat of a moving car, singing along to loud music and firing a shotgun into the darkness. Lights in the distance appear to indicate a residential area.

"I know that these circumstances place additional burdens on the government and my party. My personal situation should not distract the government and the ministry from its priorities or delay necessary reforms," he wrote in his resignation announcement.

He said he had sought to make "changes" within the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to bring about more "transparency" and had been subjected to "significant pressure and threats".

In his initial reaction to the video, Deputy Prime Minister Dabro said the video was filmed a few years ago and he fired training bullets.

The Croatian government said his behavior was "inappropriate and irresponsible".

In May 2024, Prime Minister Plenkovic's Democratic Union (HDZ) party entered into a coalition with Mr. Dabro's Homeland Movement party, which has anti-immigration, anti-LGBT views and promotes a ban on abortion.

Homeland Movement party leader Ivan Penava insisted the coalition remained "stable".

He told a news conference that the video "was private and sent to people Mr. Dabro thought were his friends... At no time did he endanger anyone's life."
