Giant crocodile bread in Ho Chi Minh City is no longer strange but the owner refuses to stop selling

The bakery with the shapes of crocodiles, horses, monkeys... on Ly Thuong Kiet Street (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City) used to attract a lot of customers. Many people were curious about the taste and enjoyed the "super big" animal-shaped bread.

Sharing with Thanh Nien , Mr. Trinh Thien Khiem (75 years old), the owner of this bakery, said that in Ho Chi Minh City, there are few shops that produce and sell animal-shaped bread. Nearly 2 years ago, many people found the bread "unique and strange" so they came to buy it after his workers researched and made it. However, the business situation is not as good as before, so he is considering finding another location to move.

Mr. Tung supports the owner of the bakery every day.

"Now the number of customers is less, not like the beginning. Calculating the cost of renting a place, labor, and materials, I am at a loss, so I have to find another place. I sell here and earn 26 million VND per month. Selling less than 5 million VND per day is not profitable," Mr. Khiem shared.

According to him, there are many reasons why people buy less animal-shaped bread these days. Firstly, large loaves make people easily get bored, so they only prefer small loaves of 20,000 VND.

Second, the recent hot weather has been prolonged, so few people eat bread. Third, in Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces, there have been food poisoning cases related to bread, so people are afraid and do not dare to eat it.

Animal-shaped bread was once famous and sought after by many diners.

"I plan to find a place with cheaper rent to continue doing business. I will not stop selling because I have been in the bakery business for decades, I cannot give it up. Before I opened in Ho Chi Minh City, I sold tens of millions of dong a day, but now people are getting tired of eating it so I can't sell it," said Mr. Khiem.

He has many animal-shaped bread establishments in many provinces in the West such as Can Tho City, An Giang , Dong Thap...

Bread price depends on size

Mr. Ly Thien Tung (57 years old), a baker, said that each animal-shaped loaf of bread costs from 20,000 to 80,000 VND depending on the size. Compared to when Mr. Tung first opened, he now has much fewer customers.

"Now, there are only many customers on weekends, and weekdays are very quiet. After the Covid-19 pandemic, business has been slower. Making animal-shaped bread takes more time than making regular bread because of the attention to detail," said Mr. Tung.

Animal-shaped bread was once famous for its unique and eye-catching shapes. Many social media sites shared the news, making everyone eager to buy these loaves of bread to try. However, at present, shop owners are also struggling to overcome difficult times and are forced to find new business directions.
