Ter Stegen is becoming a problem for Barca from a support. |
Ter Stegen underwent a second back operation on July 20 and announced he would be out for three months. However, according to La Liga regulations, only when a player is absent for at least four months can a club deduct part of his salary to register a replacement. In this case, Barca wanted to take advantage of that to register goalkeeper Joan Garcia - who is trusted by coach Hansi Flick and director Deco.
The problem arose when La Liga required written consent from Ter Stegen to receive his medical records. However, the player refused to sign the authorization, citing personal data protection laws - which override any agreement between La Liga and the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE).
This has prevented the tournament organisers from convening a medical panel to make a decision. Meanwhile, Barca are studying the possibility of internal disciplinary action and trying to force Ter Stegen to cooperate under the terms of his contract. Communication channels between the two parties have been cut off, and the club has stated that they will not initiate dialogue unless the German goalkeeper makes a request.
Initially, Barca planned to hold a meeting with doctor Ricard Pruna and director Deco to ease the tension. However, after a strong reaction from Ter Stegen, this plan was canceled. Currently, Deco is absent to attend the funeral of his former teammate Jorge Costa in Portugal, and the case is in a state of heavy waiting.
By not being able to use the salary fund to register new players, Barca put themselves in a difficult position. On the contrary, Ter Stegen also faced serious consequences: losing his position at the club, being criticized by fans and at risk of losing his place at the 2026 World Cup. Barca President Joan Laporta is said to be "very angry" with the player's behavior.
All of this has led to a stalemate. If neither side backs down, the crisis could be devastating for both sides — on the pitch and in the boardroom.
