Dao Khuong Duy's letter, a 6th grader, in which he imagined himself becoming a superhero to ensure traffic safety, beat 1.5 million entries to win first prize in the national UPU letter-writing contest.

This is the first time Ben Tre has had a student win first prize nationally, the organizers of the UPU International Letter Writing Competition said at the award ceremony on the morning of May 19. Khuong Duy's letter was assessed as concise, strong and emotional.

With the request to imagine himself as a superhero, making all roads safe for children, Duy transformed into superhero S-247, wrote a letter to his parents on planet Love-365, telling them about what he did on Earth.

Responding to VnExpress at the end of April when he learned of the award, Duy said that "S" is the first letter of many meaningful words such as superhero, sacrifice, safety. 24/7 is a superhero who is always present anytime, anywhere. Meanwhile, Love-365 symbolizes 365 days on Earth.

In the letter, the male student showed his ability to read and apply a lot of current information. When mentioning the current situation of traffic accidents, Duy used the comparison image "every four minutes, the evil god of traffic accidents takes away a little angel from the Earth".

Poet Tran Dang Khoa, head of the jury, said Khuong Duy's letter deserved first prize because of its rich and poetic language and expression. He said the article was highly appreciated because of the way it incorporated data, always emphasizing that traffic issues are a concern of "Earth", not just Vietnam.

The UPU International Letter Writing Competition has been organized by the Universal Postal Union since 1971. In Vietnam, this is the 35th time the competition has been launched, and it is also the letter writing competition with the most students participating to date. This year's theme is associated with the United Nations' action program on road safety. The organizing committee will accept entries from January to March 2022, with a total of more than 1.5 million entries.

Poet Tran Dang Khoa said that traffic safety for children is a familiar issue, and the requirement to transform into superheroes will stimulate students' imagination. The organizing committee evaluated the solutions that students proposed, ranging from eliminating degraded roads, installing signs and barriers... to inventing safe means of transportation for children.

In addition to Khuong Duy's first prize, the UPU International Letter Writing Competition's organizing committee also awarded three second prizes, five third prizes, 30 consolation prizes, 61 promising writer prizes and four prizes to disabled students.
