Toronto Star on January 15 quoted a source as saying that Canada could impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth up to $105 billion if President-elect Donald Trump increases tariffs on Canadian goods and services.

Canada has drawn up a list of targets but will hold consultations before taking action.

The extent of Canada's response will depend on what the incoming Trump administration does, the source added.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the leaders of 10 Canadian provinces to discuss how to respond to any US tariffs and the list of tariff targets.

“All options are on the table,” Trudeau stressed after the meeting. Trudeau said any response would be strong, but he declined to elaborate.

During his election campaign, President-elect Donald Trump vowed to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian imports when he takes office on January 20. This could be devastating for Canada, as the US is a major trading partner.

Recently, Mr. Trump said that he did not rule out using economic pressure to turn Canada into the 51st state of the United States if its neighbor did not address Washington's concerns about immigration or trade deficit.
