On May 19, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia - a French overseas territory in the Pacific Ocean , posing a risk of tsunami affecting South Pacific countries.
According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at around 02:57 GMT (09:57 Vietnam time), at a depth of about 38km. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for areas in New Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu, and assessed that tsunami waves could strike coastal areas within 1,000km of the earthquake's epicenter. The US Tsunami Warning Center also feared strong tsunami waves along the coasts of Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji.
Meanwhile, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology warned that the earthquake could pose a danger to Lord Howe Island off the country's east coast. New Zealand is also assessing the risk from the earthquake and the potential for a tsunami to hit the country.
