John Lennon's guitar up for auction

A 12-string acoustic guitar owned by John Lennon in the 1960s was sold for $2.86 million at an auction in New York on May 29, setting a new record for a guitar associated with rock legend The Beatles.

According to Julien's Auctions, the guitar was used by both John Lennon and George Harrison during the recording sessions for the albums "Help!" and "Rubber Soul," both released in 1965.

Lennon later gave the guitar to singer Gordon Waller later that year. Waller passed it on to his manager, who kept it in his attic for decades.

Mr. David Goodman, CEO of Julien's Auctions, shared the joy and honor of auctioning the guitar of the legendary John Lennon for a record price.

The previous record for a Beatles guitar belonged to another instrument used by Lennon when he wrote and recorded such hits as "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "All My Loving."

This piano sold for $2.41 million at Julien's Auctions in 2015.
