A huge fire destroyed a slum in Isla Puting Bato village, Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

The Manila Fire Department said about 1,000 homes were destroyed in the blaze, which is believed to have started on the second floor of a building. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Images provided by the city's disaster agency showed houses in Isla Puting Bato village, which the fire department said was home to about 2,000 households, all but gone.

A woman living in this area named Leonila Abiertas, 65 years old, lost almost all her property but still kept the ashes of her late husband.

"I only received the urn containing my husband's ashes," Abiertas told AFP, crying.

"I really don't know how I can start my life over after this fire."

"That area is prone to fires because most of the houses there are made of light materials," firefighter Geanelli Nunez told AFP .

Authorities dispatched 36 trucks and four fire boats to put out the fire, while the air force also dispatched two helicopters to assist.
