Study every night
From Monday to Friday every week, the Ngok Leang Primary School (belonging to Kim Dong Primary School, Tu Mo Rong Commune, Quang Ngai ) is lit up. The literacy class with 47 students resounds with the teacher's voice and students spelling. Some people carry their children to school, others walk early, carrying flashlights, notebooks and pens supported by the commune government for the first class.
Many students used to know how to read and write but have forgotten it due to lack of use, and some have never held a pen. Their hands, callused from hard work, now fumble with their writing, their handwriting is scribbled but their eyes sparkle.
“The class aims to help people learn to read, write, and calculate, as well as learn life skills and community communication. Many people have started to apply them to production and trading. They are more confident when going to transactions, seeing a doctor or interacting with commune officials,” said Mr. Duong Dang Khoa, Vice Chairman of Tu Mo Rong Commune People’s Committee.
The class is divided into 3 semesters. Semester I is from March 3 to June 6, 2025, Semester II is from June 9 to September 12, and Semester III is from September 15 to December 19, 2025. There are 5 sessions per week, from Monday evening to Friday evening, each session consists of 5 lessons. It is expected that by the first quarter of 2026, the class will complete the first phase of the program. After that, the locality will continue to classify the levels to organize classes suitable for the reality of each group of students.
Classes take place in the evenings, in small, simple but warm rooms. On an old blackboard, the teacher patiently writes each letter, spelling each sound. Below the class, students listen attentively, holding pens in their hands, taking notes carefully, even though some have blurred vision and shaky hands due to age.
There were rainy days when the roads were slippery, but the class was still full of people. Students brought raincoats and flashlights and walked quickly to get to class on time. No one wanted to miss a class, because for them, each class was a chance to open up a new world .
Go to school to set an example for others

In Ngok Leang village, the class initially had only a few people. But then people encouraged each other to go to school, those who went first encouraged those who went later. Now, there are couples studying together like Mr. A Pin and Ms. Y Der or Ms. Y Du and Mr. A Thuy.
“Seeing everyone go to school, the atmosphere in the class is very happy. Everyone tries their best, no one wants to miss any class,” said Ms. Y Khuong – Head of Ngok Leang village.
Few people know that Ms. Y Khuong is also taking supplementary courses with the hope of obtaining a high school diploma when she is over 40 years old. In 2009, she dropped out of grade 11 due to her circumstances. After nearly 15 years of putting her studies on hold, in 2024, encouraged by her husband and two children, she decided to return to school and take supplementary courses at Tu Mo Rong Continuing Education Center.
“My eldest child is in 11th grade, my youngest is in 9th grade. I also go to school to set an example for my children and for the villagers. If I can do it, anyone can do it,” she said with a smile.
Up to now, she has completed grade 11, is about to enter grade 12 and aims to take the high school graduation exam in 2026.
“I still have many dreams, but first I have to get a degree. Only by studying can I understand and do better for my people,” Ms. Y Khuong confided.
Studying for her is no longer a personal matter, but a common motivation for the whole community. The village chief's return to class is like a fire that quietly spreads to every roof and slope, lighting up the belief that: It is never too late to study.
In a simple classroom in the middle of the forest, each letter is carefully written like a seed of hope. The literacy class not only helps people learn to read and write, but also lights up the light of confidence, arouses the desire to learn and the belief in a life full of change.
