Accepting body shapes

Nguyen Van Thien, a former 12th grade student at Krong Bong High School, is one of the most special candidates in the 2025 high school graduation exam in Dak Lak . With the appearance of an elementary school boy, Thien has gone through a 12-year journey of studying with great determination.

Thien impresses with his bright eyes and face that looks like a second grader. Although he smiles a lot, he is quite shy when sharing about himself and his future plans.

“Until now, I still don’t understand why my body can’t grow and develop like my peers. I asked my parents this question many times when I was little, but now I don’t ask anymore. I accept this body shape as part of my life,” Thien confided.

Born weighing 3.2kg, Thien developed normally in his early years. However, from the age of 3, he began to gain weight slowly, became thin and often sick. After visiting many places, Thien was diagnosed with stunted growth due to anemia and malnutrition. By the age of 18, Thien weighed only 22kg and was 1m25 tall, then stopped growing.

Mrs. Pham Thi Hanh (46 years old, Thien's mother) shared: "I always thought that my son lacked some nutrients because the family was poor and could not take good care of him, but he would develop normally. However, when Thien entered secondary school, his friends were all growing up, but my son was still like a little boy. Seeing him lost in the crowd of friends, with a thin and weak body, we felt so sorry for him."

Thien is a studious, gentle, hard-working student and always maintains a cheerful attitude to reassure his parents. During 12 years of high school, despite his poor health and having to miss school many times due to physical weakness, Thien never had the intention of dropping out. He was always a good, excellent, and well-behaved student. For Thien, the years of studying at school with his friends are beautiful memories of his youth.

“Because I am the youngest in school, my friends always care for me. Knowing that I cannot ride my bike to school, my friends come to my house to pick me up and always encourage me in life. The great love from my family, friends and school helps me overcome my inferiority complex and always move forward,” Thien shared.

Thien’s younger brother, although only 10 years old, is tall and can carry his older brother. Every afternoon, Thien is often taken for a bike ride by his younger brother. The two brothers love each other very much and share stories about school. Those moments always make Thien feel warm and happy.

During the recent high school exam at Krong Bong High School, Thien was once mistaken by the invigilator for a primary school student who had wandered into the school. Being noticed by many people because of his small appearance has long been a familiar thing for this tiny boy.

Struggling with the dream of becoming a fashion designer

Thien has been passionate about drawing since he was a child. On days off from school, he often takes out his pen and paper to draw things he loves, creating new outfits with his skillful strokes and color combinations.

Finishing the high school exam with a total score of over 20, Thien worried a lot about his future path. He dreams of becoming a fashion designer, but the current situation of himself and his family makes him very worried.

Thien's family is a farming family, a near-poor household in the commune. His mother is not in good health, and his father is the main breadwinner in the family to support Thien and his 10-year-old brother to go to school. Continuing to study is not easy.

“If my son is determined, my family will still support him and try our best. Thinking about Thien, I still worry a lot. When my parents are old, I don’t know who will take care of him,” Ms. Hanh said in tears.

Seeing his mother crying because she was worried about him, Thien was also about to cry because he felt sorry for his parents. The young man said that if he were to go to college or university far from home in the future, he would try to take care of himself and not let his parents worry.

“I hope to study at a school that has a major in fashion design, but I also hope the tuition is not too high. I know my family is not rich, and my parents have to worry about many other things,” Thien said.

The little boy never stopped dreaming of standing on his own two feet, not being a burden to his parents or anyone else. To make his dreams come true, Thien knew that he had to try very hard. Despite the disadvantages, Thien never complained about his fate and always told himself to move forward.

Mr. Duong Kim Thach, Principal of Krong Bong High School, commented that Thien is the most special student of the school so far, impressing with his hard work and gentleness.

"Despite his own disadvantages, Thien always has the will to overcome difficulties and has a strong determination that makes everyone love him. The school really hopes that Thien will achieve his future dreams," Mr. Thach said.
