Summer is not over yet and I'm already busy preparing for the 10th grade entrance exam.

For many years now, getting a “ticket” to grade 10 at a public high school has always been a fierce competition. Therefore, right from the time they are about to enter grade 9, many students have had to start “exam preparation”.

After nearly a month of summer vacation, extra classes have “opened” again. In addition to the three main subjects of Math, Literature and English, many students also take Natural Science, because according to the regulations on the 10th grade entrance exam, in addition to the two compulsory subjects of Math and Literature, the third subject or exam will be decided by the Department of Education and Training.

Hoping for a ticket to public school

After graduating from junior high school, students have many choices and different directions: studying at private high schools with many "segments" suitable for different economic conditions, studying at vocational schools with a variety of occupations, studying at vocational education centers - continuing education. However, being able to study at a public high school is still the desire of the majority of students and their parents.

Ever since their children were in 8th grade, parents have been listening to news and learning about the “famous” 10th grade entrance exam tutors in Bien Hoa City. Therefore, even before the 2024-2025 school year ends, many parents have registered to “reserve a spot” for their children in these exam preparation classes. If they register late, the class will be full, and parents will have to find another exam preparation teacher.

“I want my child to go to a public high school, first of all because I believe in the quality of teaching and learning in the public school system. Second, studying in a public school is much less expensive than studying in a private school. As for sending my child to vocational school, I have not thought about it. To give my child a high chance of entering a public school, I send him to extra classes and early review,” said Ms. Tran Thi Thuy (Long Binh ward, Bien Hoa city).

Sharing the same opinion as Ms. Thuy, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hao (residing in Thanh Phu commune, Vinh Cuu district) said that she is confident about her son's academic ability. The competition to get into public schools is not difficult, but because she wants her son to get into the "top" schools in the province, she still has to send him to exam preparation classes.

Parents must have a strategy and choose a test preparation class that is appropriate for their child’s ability. Not all registrations will be accepted by teachers, because there are many test preparation classes for good and excellent students with the goal of entering top schools; while there are classes for students with average and good abilities with the goal of trying their best to pass the entrance exam to public high schools.

Start of new exam preparation season

After nearly a month of summer vacation, most of the public high school extra classes and 10th grade exam preparation classes have reopened to welcome new students. Although it is called exam preparation, at this stage, teachers are reinforcing students’ old knowledge to make up for the “gaps” in their knowledge. Next, students will learn new knowledge of the 9th grade program.

Unlike regular extra classes (parents often register their children with subject teachers to teach them in class), when preparing for the 10th grade entrance exam, parents choose and register their children to study with teachers who are "famous" for quality exam preparation, with a high rate of public students passing. Because these exam preparation classes have many students from different schools studying together, teachers do not teach according to the progress in the textbooks (because students from different schools may study different textbooks) but teach according to the knowledge specified in the curriculum framework.

Students will be regularly given practice tests, guided test-taking skills, and surveys to assess their abilities in order to have appropriate revision directions. In addition, many students are currently enrolled in online courses to practice solving additional tests.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training on the Public High School Grade 10 Entrance Exam, the exam only has 2 compulsory subjects: Math and Literature, and the third subject or test is selected by the Department of Education and Training. However, this third subject or test cannot be selected the same for more than 3 consecutive years. The third subject can be selected from the following subjects: Foreign Language 1 (English), Civic Education, Natural Sciences , History and Geography, Technology, and Information Technology.

In the recent 2025-2026 public high school entrance exam, the Department of Education and Training selected English as the third subject. Next year, it is likely that this subject will continue to be selected, but it could also be another subject. Therefore, to be "sure", the 3 subjects: Math, Literature and English are still prioritized by parents to register their children for extra classes. In addition, Natural Sciences is also a subject that many parents choose to "invest" in. A few parents even register their children for an extra subject with 2 teachers so that their children can grasp a variety of ways to do the test.

On average, each subject has 2-3 extra classes per week. With 3-4 extra classes, students almost have to study a “full” week. Some teachers combine in-person and online teaching. Accordingly, students study in-person in class for 1-2 sessions, and study online for one session. However, this schedule will change when students officially enter the new school year.
