Mr. Toh is 70 years old.
Mr Toh Hong Keng became one of the world's oldest bachelors.
Toh Hong Keng, a tech entrepreneur in Malaysia, retired in 2019 and spent weeks studying for his exams and applying to nearly 10 medical schools in Asia.
Because the programs required a lower age, he was rejected by many schools and almost gave up hope until he received an acceptance letter from Southwestern University, Philippines.
“The only reason I decided to pursue medicine at this age is because I wanted to do something useful. Even if I can’t practice medicine, at least I can take care of my own health,” Mr Toh shared.
For Mr Toh, the journey to medical school was not easy. At the age of 65 to 70, his health had declined significantly and his body was no longer as agile as before.
In his third year, he was made to repeat a year because he failed his paediatrics exam and could not keep up with the clinical program at the hospital, which required 30-hour shifts. However, Mr Toh did not give up and studied even harder.
“During his five-year course of study, Mr Toh never asked for any special treatment. He was very passionate and persistent in his studies,” said Dr Marvi Dulnuan-Niog, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Southwestern University.
