Former BBC presenter charged with receiving child pornography

Edwards, 62, who left the BBC in April, now faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years and a minimum of 12 months.

During the 25-minute hearing, Edwards admitted receiving 41 child pornography images via WhatsApp, including seven of the most serious.

Under English law, electronic communications involving child pornography, including receiving and downloading images and videos , can constitute the offence of making child pornography.

Edwards' offences took place between December 2020 and August 2021. Westminster Magistrates' Court in London heard that Edwards received 377 indecent images from a man she met online, of which 41 were child pornography.

“These images appear to have been obtained with consent,” prosecutor Ian Hope told the court.

Edwards' lawyer, Philip Evans, said his client's equipment was seized and he did not create or share the images.

Chief Judge Paul Goldspring released Edwards on bail until his next court appearance on September 16, when he could be sentenced.

Edwards has been the BBC's main presenter at major events such as the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. He has also been the presenter of the BBC's 10pm news programme since 2003.
