Currently, the number of people regularly donating blood in Vietnam is increasing, the meaning of blood donation has spread to many classes of people.

On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day (June 14), Associate Professor Nguyen Ha Thanh, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, said that tens of thousands of people have regularly performed this simple act, considering it a habit, a daily way of life to bring joy and happiness to themselves and to those in need of blood.

According to Associate Professor Thanh, after many years of voluntary blood donation campaign, there has been a fundamental change in the awareness of all classes of people across the country. Blood donation has become an action, a noble gesture that is regularly performed by everyone, by all classes in society, and with the participation of Party agencies, the government and the entire people. Thanks to that, in recent years, there has been almost no blood shortage during the summer and Tet, and patients no longer have to wait for blood due to a lack of blood donors.

In Vietnam, since 2007, the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation at all levels has organized activities in response to International Blood Donor Day on June 14 to recognize and honor the noble deeds of blood donors.

In 2022, the whole country mobilized and received more than 1.4 million units of blood, basically meeting the blood needs for emergency care and patient treatment; the voluntary blood donation rate reached 99%; the rate of blood donation among the population reached nearly 1.5%. Many communication campaigns and voluntary blood donation events were organized creatively and successfully such as: National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on April 7, International Blood Donor Day on June 14, Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign on the occasion of Tet and the Spring Festival, the Summer Blood Drops Campaign and the Red Journey...

Of the more than 1.4 million blood units nationwide, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion received 379,161 units of blood, accounting for 26.4% of the total blood received nationwide. The Institute also prepared and supplied nearly 688,000 units of blood products to 181 medical facilities in 29 provinces/cities.

Every year, millions of people around the world volunteer to donate blood, contributing to the invaluable lives of patients. To acknowledge and express gratitude for this noble act, since 2005, the World Health Organization has chosen June 14 as World Blood Donor Day.

On this year's World Blood Donor Day, the World Health Organization has chosen the message "Donate blood and plasma regularly. Share love, give life" to call on everyone to donate blood and blood components regularly, including plasma.
