The 2025 Southeast Asian Women's Football Championship will take place from August 6 to 19 at Lach Tray Stadium and Viet Tri Stadium ( Phu Tho ).
The tournament brings together 8 teams, including: Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia (Group A), Indonesia Australia, Philippines, Myanmar and Timor Leste (Group B).
The teams are divided into 2 groups, compete in a round robin to calculate points, rank, and select the 2 teams with the best results to enter the semi-finals.
Playing at home in Hai Phong , coach Mai Duc Chung and his team aim to win the championship and hope to receive support from a large number of fans.
The Vietnamese women's team will meet Cambodia, the weakest opponent in Group A, in the opening match.
With home field advantage as well as superior class, "The Diamond Girls" are expected to have a win on the opening day.
Speaking at a press conference before the match, coach Mai Duc Chung said: “I would like to thank the Southeast Asian Football Federation and the Vietnam Football Federation for organizing the tournament. This is a tournament for teams in the Southeast Asian region to practice and develop themselves before attending the SEA Games.
I pay great attention to both Group A and Group B. Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines have all made progress.”
The captain of the Vietnamese women's team added: "I have watched their friendly matches and saw that every opponent has prepared well. Cambodia's friendly matches with Guam or Hong Kong all showed progress.
Playing at home will receive the support of many fans. I also hope that fans, including Hai Phong fans, will come to the stadium to cheer for the Vietnamese team at the tournament."
Meanwhile, captain striker Huynh Nhu confidently said: “My personal goal as well as the Vietnamese team’s is to play our best for the fans. After that, we will try our best in every match to win the championship.
Playing at home is both an advantage and a pressure. Hopefully, with the support of Hai Phong fans as well as fans nationwide, we will make history.”
In the history of the tournament, the Vietnamese women's team has won the Southeast Asian championship 3 times (2006, 2012, 2019), while Thailand holds the record with 4 championships.
In this year's tournament, the Thai women's team does not have the strongest squad, plus playing at home, this is considered the best opportunity for coach Mai Duc Chung and his team to equalize their opponents' achievements.
