Dortmund cautious with Sancho because of high salary, low attitude

Despite being a star at Signal Iduna Park, Jadon Sancho is no longer an obvious choice for Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund has not nodded to Sancho.

High salary, poor performance and questionable attitude are making the German team hesitate to re-sign the "old man".

It's hard to believe Jadon Sancho's brilliant time at Borussia Dortmund and the reality of where he is today. Once a symbol of speed, creativity and explosiveness - Sancho left Germany in 2021 in a blaze of glory. But after three lost seasons at Manchester United, the England striker is facing a big question: will even his former club, Borussia Dortmund, want him back?

According to the Daily Mail , Dortmund are still hesitant to re-sign Sancho, despite the player reportedly being willing to cut his salary in half to leave Old Trafford. Despite spending half of the 2024/25 season on loan at the black-yellow team and playing well, Sancho still hasn't been completely convincing.

It’s not just about numbers. Dortmund are a club renowned for their ability to spot and elevate raw talent, but they don’t often invest in sentimental or “nostalgic” deals. Sancho, despite his time there, is no longer the young player who was eager to prove himself. At 25, he is expected to be a pillar, a leader – something the club itself is not sure he can still deliver.

In addition to his inconsistent form, Dortmund are also concerned about Sancho's professionalism. His public fallout with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag not only saw him pushed out of the first team, but also raised questions about the maturity of a player once seen as the future of England.

Sancho's story is a reminder that elite football never lives in the past.

Even if Sancho were willing to take a pay cut – from over £250,000 a week to almost £125,000 – it would still be a prudent investment for a financially cautious Dortmund side who have just changed managers, are looking to rebuild after a disappointing season and cannot afford to risk “attitude uncertainty”.

Sancho’s story is a reminder that elite football never lives in the past. Dortmund may still have respect and sympathy for him, but that doesn’t mean they will open their doors to him again. Here, emotion must give way to reason – a principle that has helped the Ruhr club maintain a stable position despite being regularly “gutted” by the big boys.

Sancho is at a crossroads in his career. If Dortmund also reject him, his options will be even narrower. Will it be a mid-table Premier League club? Or a trip to Saudi Arabia? With himself no longer seen as a rising talent, he must prove his worth – not with words, but with actions and absolute professionalism.

For Dortmund, the Sancho question is not simply "buy or not buy". It is a question of future direction: will they continue to be a launching pad for young stars like Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, or choose to return to names that have passed the other side of the slope of expectations?
