As of the evening of April 3, Myanmar authorities said that the death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar on March 28 had risen to 3,145 as rescue teams continued to find more bodies, according to Myanmar State Television MRTV .
In addition, the Myanmar earthquake also left 4,589 people injured and 221 people missing, according to Xinhua news agency.
According to MRTV , humanitarian aid organizations are rushing to provide medical services and accommodation to survivors of the Myanmar earthquake.
Myanmar Fire Brigade is coordinating with international rescue teams to conduct search and rescue operations in areas severely affected by the earthquake.
So far, rescue teams have saved 653 people trapped under the rubble and found 626 bodies.
Myanmar's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology said that as of the morning of April 3, the country had recorded 66 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 2.8 to 7.5 on the Richter scale, continuing to cause concern for millions of people living in panic and insecurity.
The 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28 struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second largest city. The quake destroyed thousands of structures, collapsed roads and severely damaged bridges in many areas.
Local media reports suggest the death toll could be significantly higher than the official figures. With widespread communications outages and isolated areas, the actual figure could rise sharply in the coming days.
According to a report released by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) on April 3, the earthquake and its aftershocks affected more than 17 million people in 57 out of 330 townships in Myanmar. Of these, more than 9 million people were severely affected.
