FBI releases documents on Queen Elizabeth assassination attempt in US 40 years ago

US security agencies have uncovered assassination plots targeting Queen Elizabeth II during her visits to the US 40 years ago.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has just released 103 documents related to some of the late Queen Elizabeth II's trips to the US. One of the documents mentions a plot to assassinate the Queen during her visit to the US with her husband in 1983.

According to the documents, a police officer who frequented an Irish immigrant pub in San Francisco alerted federal agents to a February 4, 1983, call from a man who said he was planning to attack members of the British royal family to avenge his daughter.

The man claimed he would harm the Queen "by dropping an object from the Golden Gate Bridge onto the royal yacht Britannia" or "attempt to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II when she visits Yosemite National Park." The plot was uncovered weeks before the Queen and her husband were due to visit the United States.

According to the documents, the Secret Service attempted to close the Golden Gate Bridge walkways while the Britannia was nearby. While it is unclear whether any arrests were made, the documents say the royal family's visit went smoothly.
