More than 40% of companies worldwide are facing a shortage of human resources.

Accordingly, Kaspersky conducted a study called “Portrait of the Modern Information Security Professional” to assess the current state of the labor market and analyze the reasons for the shortage of cybersecurity expertise.

The study surveyed more than 1,000 InfoSec professionals from Asia- Pacific (APAC), Europe, META, North and Latin America, and found that 41% of companies described their cybersecurity team as “significantly understaffed.”

Overall, survey respondents reported that the most understaffed positions were Information Security Research and Malware Analysis, with over 40% of companies saying these were the hardest positions to fill. Increased demand for these positions was reported in Europe, Russia, and Latin America.

Security Operations Center (SOC) professionals, including Security Auditors and Cybersecurity, are rated as having low staffing levels, at 35% and 33%, respectively. The shortage of SOC professionals is particularly noticeable in APAC, however, the shortage of Security Auditors and Cybersecurity professionals is mainly a concern in the META region.

“To reduce the shortage of highly qualified InfoSec specialists, companies should offer better salaries, working conditions and bonuses, and invest in training and updating their knowledge. However, the survey results show that these measures do not always match the needs and conditions of businesses,” commented Vladimir Dashchenko, head of security operations at Kaspersky ICS CERT.
