Gen Z is not lazy, they just need the right training

Julia Toothacre, a career strategist at ResumeTemplates.com, told Business Insider that some employers complain about millennials’ work ethic, accountability, and communication skills. But this is an opportunity for bosses to mentor and train their young employees, which is important.

According to Toothacre, the pandemic has created many challenges and difficulties for young workers. Lockdowns and social distancing have deprived young workers of opportunities to intern and work in offices, while this is where they easily learn workplace behaviors and norms.

In addition, young workers are eager to develop and achieve their goals at work. Professor Thomas Roulet (Cambridge University) - who specializes in the fields of social organization and leadership - said that the expectations of the younger generation at work have gradually changed and they are no longer lazy compared to previous generations.

"The younger generation wants to develop, has a purpose, and also wants a balance between work and life. Therefore, organizations must fully meet those requirements," said Professor Roulet.

Jon Veasey-Deters, senior research analyst at Seramount Research and Professional Services, says newcomers to the workforce often set the same goals as their more experienced colleagues. He says they want to earn a steady paycheck, make a positive impact on the world , and add value to their work.

But those goals aren’t always easy to achieve, especially for younger people. Since early 2020, Gen Y and Gen Z employees have seen a significant decline in learning opportunities and a decrease in engagement in their jobs, according to Gallup.

There’s a stereotype that young people are screen-obsessed and don’t want to go to the office. But many young people actually want to go to the office, sometimes more than their bosses. The survey also found that both young and older workers want flexible working. Toothacre says training and coaching can help young workers quickly understand feedback and suggestions from their bosses.

KPMG, for example, has offered classes on soft skills like how to write emails, how to converse with colleagues, and even what to wear to the office. “It’s a good idea to have classes on basic office etiquette. Some older people need these classes too,” Toothacre said.
