Greenwood chose to play for Jamaica. |
The Times reported that after being granted a Jamaican passport, Greenwood only needs to complete the procedure of changing his registration from the English Football Association (FA) to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to be eligible to participate in next month's World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Trinidad & Tobago.
The JFF had expected Greenwood to be eligible to play before the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in North and Central America in June, and viewed him as a key factor in this year's CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign.
But with delays in paperwork, Greenwood will miss out on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June and the 2025 Gold Cup. However, Jamaica head coach Steve McClaren is still pleased that Greenwood will be able to play for the Caribbean team in September.
Greenwood is part of a strategy by former England manager Steve McClaren to attract naturalised players to Jamaica. Players born in England but with Jamaican heritage are seen as a key source of supply for the JFF and McClaren.
Greenwood's prospects of playing for the Three Lions ended in January, when the Football Association revealed that the player had requested a transfer to another team. "Once he leaves, he will not be able to come back," Mark Bullingham, FA chief executive, once emphasized.
