In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the rocket was launched from the Khan Younis area in southern Gaza towards Rishon LeZion, a city south of Tel Aviv, triggering an air raid alert in Israel.

The missile is believed to have fallen into an open field and caused no casualties.

Later, in a statement, the Hamas movement claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the movement, had carried out the rocket launch in response to Israeli attacks on Palestinians.

The rocket attack took place in the context of indirect ceasefire negotiations between Hamas and Israel resuming in Cairo (Egypt) without any concrete progress.

Hamas said on Monday it had rejected new conditions set by Israel in ceasefire talks in Gaza, raising doubts about the possibility of a breakthrough in the latest US-backed effort to end the more than 10-month conflict in the Palestinian territory.

Hamas said Israel had backed away from its commitment to withdraw troops from the Philadelphia Corridor and set new conditions, which it identified as the sticking point in the talks brokered by the United States, Egypt and Qatar.

Speaking on Al-Aqsa TV, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan said: "We will not accept negotiations on withdrawing what we agreed on July 2 or new conditions."

According to Mr. Hamdan, Hamas has forwarded to the mediators its response to the latest proposal, affirming that the information given by Washington that the parties are about to reach an agreement is not true.
