Sulfur technology promises to revolutionize battery life

Molyon, a subsidiary of the University of Cambridge (UK), has just announced its success in using the metal molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) material to create cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries. This technology helps stabilize the chemistry inside the battery, allowing the battery to operate stably for hundreds of cycles and store twice as much energy as traditional lithium-ion batteries.

“Lithium-ion batteries are reaching their performance limits,” said Molyon CEO Ismail Sami. “We need the next generation of batteries to address battery life concerns and accelerate the growth of electric vehicles.”

Lithium-sulfur batteries use sulfur, an abundant and inexpensive element, in place of rare metals in lithium-ion batteries. This reduces cost, weight, and increases battery safety.

Molyon has raised more than $4 million in its first round of funding and is focused on building a manufacturing facility to commercialize this new battery technology. Potential applications of lithium-sulfur batteries include electric vehicles, drones, smartphones and many other devices.
