The Henley Index ranking of the world's most powerful passports ranked Vietnam's passport at 90th, down 3 places compared to the announcement in July.
According to the Henley Passport Index, Vietnam ranks 90th globally. This is the third time in 19 years that Henley has surveyed Vietnam to rank 90 or lower. The other two years that Vietnam's passport ranked low were 2015 (ranked 94th) and 2021 (ranked 95th).
With a ranking of 90, Vietnamese citizens can enter 51 destinations without a visa or only need to apply for an e-visa, a visa at the border, or an ETA (electronic travel permit) out of a total of 199 countries and territories. In the ranking announced in July, the Vietnamese passport ranked 87th, with visa exemption in 55 destinations.
Some destinations that Vietnamese citizens can enter without a visa or only need an e-visa, a border visa include Barbados, Bolivia, Brunei, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde Islands, Chile, Comoro Islands, Cook Islands, Djibouti, Dominica, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Iran, Indonesia, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Panama, Philippines, Suriname, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu.
In Southeast Asia, the Vietnamese passport ranks above Laos (92nd) and Myanmar (93rd). Singapore continues to be the country with the most powerful passport in the world as well as in the region, with its citizens exempted from visas to 195 countries and territories. The Malaysian passport is the second most powerful in Southeast Asia, with visa exemptions to 183 destinations, followed by Brunei with 166 destinations. Thailand, a country with an economy heavily dependent on tourism, ranks fourth in the region, with 82 countries and territories exempting visas for its citizens.
The five countries with passports at the bottom of the ranking are Afghanistan (visa-free access to 26 destinations), Syria (27 destinations), Iraq (31 destinations), Yemen and Pakistan (33 destinations).
Henley & Partners' ranking takes data from the International Air Transport Association, a large, accurate travel information database published annually since 2005. The Henley Passport Index has been ranking passports of countries and territories since 2006.
