VnExpressVnExpress07/06/2023

12 million candidates registered for the university entrance exam in China, the largest number ever.

This year’s Chinese college entrance exam (gaokao) takes place on June 7-8. This is considered an important milestone for students in this country because the scores will almost certainly determine their future academic path and career.

China's Ministry of Education said last week that 12.91 million students registered to take the college entrance exam, breaking last year's record of 11.93 million.

To ensure the exam is safe, the Ministry has asked localities to make their best efforts and asked the Ministry of Public Security , Industry and Information Technology to coordinate to detect and handle cheating. Anyone found cheating will be severely punished.

This year, candidates do not have to follow strict epidemic prevention measures and wear masks like last year. However, some places have posted notices reminding candidates to monitor their health.

Beijing City recommends that candidates strengthen health protection, avoid or limit going to crowded places and wear masks if required. Candidates must report to the school if they have symptoms such as fever or cough.

Shandong province requires candidates to monitor their health for three days before the exam. If they have Covid, they will be assigned a separate exam room and required to wear a mask. Meanwhile, in Fujian province, candidates are not allowed to wear masks in the exam room. If they choose to wear one, the mask must be provided by the invigilator.

A parent surnamed Han in Beijing said her whole family had Covid but she and her daughter were not worried.

“Three years ago, my daughter did very well in her high school entrance exam despite the pandemic and spent most of her time studying online afterwards. So now she is quite comfortable,” she said. Ms. Han and her daughter moved to a hotel a week before the exam to have some peace and quiet. Her husband will take care of their young son at home.

The Gaokao was first held in 1952. Candidates must complete four exams, including: Chinese, Foreign Language, Mathematics and a combined exam in Natural Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) or Social Sciences (Geography, History, Politics ).
