US President Donald Trump announced that he would provide aid to Myanmar after a powerful earthquake on March 28 killed more than 150 people in Myanmar and Thailand.

US President Donald Trump said on March 28 that he had spoken to officials in Myanmar about the earthquake and that his administration would send aid, according to AFP. "It's terrible. It's a really serious earthquake. We're going to help. We've talked to the country," the leader said at the White House.

Earlier, Myanmar's Senior General Min Aung Hlaing called for support from any country or organization in the world and predicted that the number of casualties after the earthquake would continue to increase.

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake on March 28 killed 144 people and injured 732 in Myanmar. In the Thai capital Bangkok, a high-rise building under construction collapsed, burying at least 81 people, according to Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai on the afternoon of March 28. Meanwhile, rescue teams at the scene said more than 100 people were missing.

AP news agency quoted information from Thai officials saying that 10 people were killed, 16 were injured and 101 were missing at three construction sites, including the 33-story building mentioned above.

The earthquake struck at noon on March 28 with its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. Several aftershocks followed, including one measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale.

Myanmar is located in an active earthquake belt, although many of the tremors occurred in sparsely populated areas rather than in cities like on March 28. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the death toll could be as high as 1,000.
