The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has just issued Circular 25/2024 on the List of pesticides permitted and prohibited for use in Vietnam in 2024.

Accordingly, the List of pesticides permitted for use in Vietnam in 2024 has 1,918 active ingredients with 4,844 trade names.

Compared with the same category in 2023, the 2024 category has 98 more active ingredients and 309 more drugs.

Of which, pesticides accounted for the most with 753 active ingredients and 1,834 drug names (compared to last year, an increase of 42 active ingredients and 109 drug names).

Next is pesticides with 725 active ingredients with 1,676 types of drugs (an increase of 42 active ingredients with 115 drug names).

Herbicides have 273 active ingredients with 853 trade names (an increase of 13 active ingredients with 62 trade names).

The rest are forestry preservatives, post-harvest agricultural preservatives, termite killers, seed treatment chemicals, growth regulators, snail killers...

Regarding the draft on the List of pesticides banned from use in Vietnam in 2024, 31 active ingredients of pesticides banned from use in Vietnam are still kept, including active ingredients 2.4.5 T, Captan, Captafol, Methamidophos, Aldrin, Carbofuran, Chlordane, Methyl Parathion, Parathion Ethyl, BHC, Lindane...

Circular 25/2024 takes effect from January 30, 2025, replacing Circular 09/2023 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

From 2017 to 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has reviewed and removed from the List of pesticides permitted for use in Vietnam 14 active ingredients of pesticides such as Carbendazim, Thiophanate Methyl, Benomyl, Paraquat, 2,4D, Acephate, Diazinon, Malathion, Chlorpyrifos ethyl, Fipronil, Glyphosate... (this number includes 1,706 trade names and 1,265 active ingredient contents).

These are pesticides that pose a high risk of affecting human health, livestock and the environment.

According to the Plant Protection Department nationwide, there are currently 96 pesticide production facilities with a capacity of more than 300,000 tons/year and producing 30 types of drugs.

However, businesses have not been proactive in producing active ingredients. Vietnam currently has only one facility that produces active ingredients for chemical pesticides, with a capacity of about 50 tons/year and is only used for domestic consumption, not for export.

The Department also said that the total amount of pesticides used on average nationwide is gradually decreasing, from 3.81 kg/ha in 2020 to 3.21 kg/ha in 2023.
