AFP news agency quoted Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesman Daniel Hagari as saying that the country's air defense system intercepted a total of about 180 missiles of various types in a large-scale airstrike on the evening of October 1 fired by Iran.

Accordingly, Tehran's attack hit a number of targets, injuring at least 2 Israelis and killing 1 Palestinian in the West Bank.

“We have carried out a large number of intercepts. There have been several strikes that hit the centre and other areas in the south of the country,” spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said.

Referring to the attack, the Iranian delegation to the United Nations in New York posted on social network X, saying that this was a "legitimate, reasonable and just response to Israel's actions."

The mission's post stated that if the other side retaliates or carries out further aggressive actions, "a further devastating response will follow," and called on regional countries and Israel's supporters to "break up" with the country.

Meanwhile, a senior Iranian official said that the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself ordered the missile launch at Israel, adding that Tehran was "fully ready for any retaliation."

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also threatened to carry out "crushing strikes" against Israel if it retaliates for the attack.

On the Israeli side, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared at a political -security meeting: “Iran made a big mistake tonight – and they will pay the price. The Iranian government does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and to retaliate against our enemies.”

Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari affirmed: “This attack will have consequences. We have a plan and we will operate at the place and time we decide.”

This was Iran's second attack on Israel after a similar action in April 2024 in retaliation for a deadly Israeli airstrike on the Iranian Consulate in Damascus.
