(Dan Tri) - Iran confirmed on March 12 that it will negotiate with China and Russia about Tehran's nuclear program this week, days after rejecting an offer to resume negotiations from US President Donald Trump.

The meeting, confirmed by Iran and China, "will focus on relevant developments on nuclear and other issues such as sanctions relief", according to officials from the countries.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the three-way talks will take place on March 14. In addition, the three countries will discuss issues of concern including regional and international developments, issues related to cooperation within the framework of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The talks come amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States over nuclear policy and sanctions. As Tehran rejects Washington’s diplomatic moves and accelerates its nuclear program, global concerns over regional stability continue to mount.

President Trump has revived a "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran, aimed at crippling Iran economically while threatening Tehran with military action.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu will chair the discussions, which will also be attended by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.

The meeting comes after President Trump's recent efforts to restart talks on Iran's nuclear program.

Last week, the US leader sent a letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offering to negotiate a revised nuclear deal. However, Tehran rejected the offer, calling Mr Trump's approach "bullying".

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian also objected to his counterpart Trump's approach, declaring: "We cannot accept their orders and threats. I will not even negotiate with you. Do whatever you want."

Under the JCPOA, reached between Iran and the P5+1 group (UK, France, Russia, China, US and Germany) in 2015, Tehran agreed to limit its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. However, during his first term, President Trump withdrew from the deal and took steps to pressure Tehran to abandon its nuclear program, leading the Islamic nation to increase its uranium enrichment.
