Summer work - meaningful experience for students

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Instead of resting and relaxing after a hard year of studying, working part-time during the summer is a job chosen by many students. In a new environment, students not only have extra income but also gain experience, practice communication skills and become more mature in their outlook on life.

Summer work - meaningful experience for students

Part-time work helps Pham Yen Nhi experience many things in life.

During this summer, student Pham Yen Nhi, Thanh Hoa Medical College, has gradually become familiar with her part-time job at a bubble tea shop in Hac Thanh ward. Starting at 6pm and ending at 11pm, her main job is to serve and pay for drinks for customers. Yen Nhi said: “When I discussed the issue of working part-time with my family, my parents did not support it because they wanted me to spend more time studying. I also analyzed with my parents that the purpose of working part-time is to help me gain more survival skills while studying is still a top priority. The job helps me communicate better, know how to listen, be patient in all tasks and handle work more effectively. After working for a while, I am satisfied with my current job.”

Because she lived with her parents, Yen Nhi did not have to pay rent or food, so her first month's income of 3 million VND, she sent 2 million VND to her parents, and kept 1 million VND for spending during the month. The day she received the money from her first month of work to give to her parents, her whole family was moved. During her work, Yen Nhi understood more and more her parents' teachings that making money is not easy, whether it is mental or manual labor. Yen Nhi's most positive change is that from a shy girl, Yen Nhi quickly "caught up" with work, became more active and confident in communication, and she knew how to arrange her time reasonably between studying and working.

Instead of helping her parents with housework like previous years, this summer, Nguyen Phuong Linh, a student at Ly Thuong Kiet High School, experienced her first job in life as a waitress at a coffee shop in Hac Thanh Ward. With the shift work, Linh tried to arrange her time reasonably so as not to affect her extra classes to prepare for entering grade 12 after the summer vacation.

From a little girl who was protected by her parents from eating to sleeping, after working, Linh has trained herself to be more disciplined and orderly in her daily life. She wakes up on time, eats breakfast, wears uniforms to work in shifts and seriously performs assigned tasks. “At home, I don’t have to do much work, so at first I was confused, but now everything is better. This job helps me learn how to work in a team and learn many simple life skills that I have never experienced before, such as: customer communication skills; knowing how to arrange study and work time effectively and many other things that I think cannot be found in books” - Linh shared.

Working part-time during the summer will bring students many experiences to practice themselves and improve their communication skills, helping them to become more mature in their outlook on life. In reality, the jobs that students choose to do are mainly serving tables, selling goods, washing cars... which do not require too much knowledge or professional skills. This environment helps them form a disciplined lifestyle, a sense of responsibility for the assigned work as well as practice more flexible communication skills. In addition to the positive aspects of working part-time during the summer, helping students gain more life skills, however, if there is no close monitoring and guidance from the family, it will lead to unwanted consequences.

Parents should not let their children "swim" among information channels and follow the trend like their friends, but need to carefully research the job, the employer, and the working environment so that it does not affect the primary task of their studies. Specifically, many children are passionate about making money, neglecting their studies, leading to poor academic performance; especially in some special business models, such as restaurants, bars... where there are many temptations, with a lack of life experience, children are easily lured into negative temptations by bad people.

Sharing about letting her child work part-time, Ms. Nguyen Thi Cuc, mother of Pham Yen Nhi, said: “When my child asked for permission to work part-time, my family considered carefully by proactively discussing with the employer to grasp the specific work, working hours and other conditions. From there, we ensured that my child worked in a healthy and civilized environment, helping her gain more life skills to become more mature and confident.”

It is undeniable that working part-time during the summer brings many benefits to students. However, it is only really effective when they work in a healthy and safe environment. For summer work to be truly meaningful, helping children become more mature and confident in life, the family always plays an important role in accompanying and guiding children to choose suitable jobs, balancing between studying and working, in which studying is still put first, so that children can have a better future.
