The Veterans Liaison Committee of Regiment 1 and local cadres, comrades and people offered incense at the memorial service for heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Van Tuong Victory.

At the memorial service, delegates recalled the heroic sacrifices of the soldiers of the past. Fifty-nine years ago, on the night of August 17, 1965, more than a dozen warships of the US 7th Fleet anchored in an arc offshore and continuously fired cannons at Van Tuong village and high points.

On the morning of August 18, 1965, a large American force consisting of 4 battalions of Marines, 1 battalion of tanks and armored vehicles, 2 battalions of 105mm artillery, 6 landing ships and gunboats, and hundreds of fighter planes, launched a coordinated naval, land, and air operation into Van Tuong. After using artillery and aircraft to bombard and clear the way, the American troops immediately divided into 4 groups to advance toward Van Tuong.

Faced with that situation, Regiment 1 calmly coordinated closely with the militia and guerrillas to fight back the enemy. The battle lasted until the evening of August 18, 1965, causing about 900 American soldiers to be eliminated from the battle, 22 tanks and armored vehicles, and 13 planes to be shot down.
